Student Voice Committee

Introducing the TSL Student Voice

Our purpose

We are an active student community, supporting each other during our journeys as students at TSL. Something quite unique about our student community is how diverse it is. It includes students of all nationalities and levels—from visiting undergrads engaging in short projects, to MSc students, visiting students from other institutes, predoctoral interns and PhD students. We are always open to helping each other out with both, science- and every day-related matters.

We host a variety of activities throughout the year, including scientific, social, welfare and outreach events. For this, we have appointed student reps organising such activities and making sure we are well represented at the different meetings and committees at The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) and the Norwich BioSciences Institute (NBI), which discuss matters that impact our experiences as students. The members of our current committee are:

President – James Russell (3rd year PhD student in the Moscou lab). My role is to co-ordinate TSL student activities. In this capacity I am responsible for organising TSL student meetings and I work with various teams across NBI to organise events and raise student issues.

Senior Management Committee representative – Mauricio Contreras (2nd PhD student in the Kamoun lab). I represent the students at the bi-monthly TSL Senior Management meetings where it is my job to communicate the student community’s questions, needs or concerns. I also relay any useful information discussed at these Senior Management meetings back to the students to make sure we’re kept in the loop regarding important decisions!

Social representative – Camille-Madeleine Szymansky (1st year PhD student in the Jonathan Jones Lab). I am responsible for organising social events in order to allow TSL students to meet and get to know each other outside the lab environment.

Graduate Student Executive – Camilla Molinari (1st year Student in the Talbot lab). I am in charge of good communication between the Graduate Student Office (GSO) and the TSL students. To ensure this I share students’ enquires and concerns at GSO meetings and report back any important conclusions so we can all be well informed.

Athena SWAN representative – Molly Bergum (1st year PhD student in the Moscou lab). I meet with the Athena SWAN committee once a quarter. Our committee strives to assess and improve gender equality at TSL.

(Not pictured) Treasurer – Yordan Dolaptchiev (1st year PhD student in the Jonathan Jones lab). I oversee the student budget and my role mainly involves bookkeeping, making sure the Student Council has sufficient funds for planned activities, and liaising with the institute’s administration team regarding matters of expenditure. I also support the Social Rep in organising events for the students.
