Flower Design

Making genetics and biotechnology accessible through flower design

Nick Desnoyer, a postdoc in the Kamoun group, wants to use his knowledge of flower development and genetics to design The 1,000 Flower Collection, a collection of Arabidopsis thalina flowers with a wide variety of new colors, patterns, and shapes, and turn it into an educational resource.

Nick uses science to make art: developmental genes sculpt the shape, size & position of flowers, while genes that code for pigments allow him to paint his flowers with all kinds of colour gradients and patterns.

He plans to use his engineered flowers as a teaching tool and resource through a nonprofit organisation that promotes genetics and biotechnology education.
