We usually hold events to welcome new starters in October with a fun pumpkin carving contest, we celebrate Christmas with a tasty dinner and a fun Secret Santa game, and enjoy the lovely summer weather with an outdoor activity and a nice BBQ at the rec centre. Other activities in the past have also included making our own tie-dye T-shirts, baking pizza, house parties and farewell parties to say good-bye to our senior 4th year students.
Trying to keep the student community close together in times of COVID has been challenging, as in-person interactions are, of course, extremely restricted. We are all a bit overwhelmed by the number of virtual meetings and time spent in front of screens, but we still try to keep some sense of normalcy and togetherness by organising a couple of virtual socials. Last year, we were still able to enjoy our pumpkin carving on Zoom, had fun making Secret Santa guesses, and tested our knowledge with a virtual pub quiz.
Social life in Norwich and at the University of East Anglia
Norwich, as small as it may seem, has a vibrant nightlife! Whether you’re after a quirky café, some top-notch dining, a pint at a local pub, a late night out at a club, or some live music, we’ve got you covered.
In addition, during non-pandemic times, all the institutes across the NBI have access to the rec centre, which has a bar that opens on Friday evenings. Many students and staff used to go there after work to grab a pint and socialise. The rec centre is also open during the day for recreation (badminton, squash, table football and basketball), and we have access to the heated pool during late-spring and summer.
If you’re into hobbies or enjoy activities, the UEA student union has many clubs and societies you can join! Have a look at https://www.uea.su/opportunities/
