Pre-doctoral internship in the Kamoun Group
Closing Date: 10.03.2020 Reference ID: SK03/2020 Salary: £17,682
A Pre-doctoral position is available within the research group of Professor Sophien Kamoun, at The Sainsbury Laboratory, Norwich. We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic student, eager to learn, with good written and oral communications skills in English, and the ability to work well both independently and in a team. Basic knowledge in molecular biology, especially cloning and genotyping, is required. Experience in using basic bioinformatics tools, like BLAST or cloning software, is preferred.
The student will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with strong expertise in plant-pathogen interactions, molecular and biochemical analyses. The student will have the opportunity to further develop communication skills by preparing research presentations, actively participating in the institute seminar series and engaging in the discussion of scientific publications.
The group of Professor Sophien Kamoun at The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) studies the interactions between plants and filamentous pathogens. Previous studies have uncovered an intracellular immune receptor network in Solanaceae plant species that has evolved to recognize diverse pathogen molecules and confer durable disease resistance to plants. This internship will focus on discovering and validating the immune receptor networks from different plant species as sources of disease resistance to diverse plant pathogens.
Predoctoral internships are aimed at individuals who want to gain practical experience in advance of starting a PhD. An internship is where an individual works to strengthen their professional experience before embarking on a PhD. Interns will be trained in a wide variety of techniques and skills, including but not limited to molecular biology, plant pathology, plant biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry/proteomics, and cell biology. Candidates are expected to have a BSc or MSc degree and are looking at this as an experience to enrich their training and experience prior to entering a PhD program. At the end of the internship, the Group Leader will conduct a formal performance review and a reference letter will be provided accordingly.
We offer a salary within the UEA technical staff scale Grade 3 £17,682 per annum. The duration of the internship is from 6-12 months.
