Postdoctoral position in protein biochemistry and structural biology of plant immune receptors

Closing Date: 11.02.2020 Reference ID: SK01/2020 Salary: £33,797 - £40,322

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to join The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) to develop advanced protein purification procedures applied to the study of plant immune receptor function.

The postdoctoral scientist will work with Group Leaders at TSL as part of an interdisciplinary project to investigate the mechanism of intracellular plant immune receptor activation during disease resistance.  The main objectives of the postdoctoral scientist will be to develop and test protein expression systems, including insect cell expression systems and protein purification from plant cells and to optimise protein purification systems for structural analysis by X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-electron microscopy.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of achievement in a relevant area of protein biochemistry, structural biology, cryo-EM, or advanced analytical biochemistry and an eagerness to work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary, international research team. Knowledge/experience of protein production for structural biology, particularly insect cell expression systems, would be desirable. An interest in immunity mechanisms in either animal or plant systems would also be desirable. The successful candidate will also have excellent writing skills, a willingness to communicate their science and demonstrable enthusiasm and commitment to working within an interdisciplinary team.

The Sainsbury Laboratory is a world-class centre for plant/microbe interactions with a compelling record in training and mentorship of early career scientists. The candidate will join a highly-integrated interdisciplinary team of scientists with strong expertise in plant-pathogen interactions, molecular analyses, and bioinformatics. The post-holder will have opportunities to develop their technical and transferable skills during the duration of the appointment through training programmes, coaching, and mentoring. The candidate will be educated to PhD level or working towards completing a PhD.

Salary will be within the UEA Research and Analogous Staff Grade 7 scale at between £33,797 and £40,322 pa; the appointment level will reflect qualifications, skills, knowledge and achievements. The position is offered for one year, initially, renewable to up to 3 years.

Applicants should provide a CV, including the names and contact details of two referees, and a covering letter addressing the selection criteria. Applications may be submitted online using the ‘Apply’ button below. Alternatively, please send formal applications, quoting the reference number SK01/2020, either by email to HR@tsl.ac.uk or by post to Lynda Barnes, HR Advisor, The Sainsbury Laboratory, Norwich Research Park, Norwich, NR4 7UH, UK.

The Sainsbury Laboratory is a charitable company of ~ 100 research scientists and support staff and a world leader in plant science.  We are funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and are based at the Norwich Research Park. We have close links with the University of East Anglia and John Innes Centre, and the Earlham Institute. TSL partners with the John Innes Centre to operate state-of-the-art Protein Crystallography and Biophysical Analysis platforms.
