Head of Synthetic Biology

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and highly motivated individual to lead synthetic biology activities at The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) and to enable the Laboratory to maintain and develop its world-leading research activities. We are looking for an individual with an interest in technology development who, amongst other activities, will develop and adapt cutting edge cloning techniques to benefit the research of the Laboratory and the wider scientific community.

The key functions of the role will be to deliver support and training in the area of synthetic biology to TSL scientists (initially vector design and construction), to engage with and develop collaborative projects with TSL Group Leaders, and to pursue independent research within the portfolio of TSL Science

Applicants at any level are encouraged to apply; we are looking for an individual with:

  • advanced skills in molecular biology and related fields
  • experience of designing and configuring complex recombinant DNA vectors and constructs
  • good working knowledge of synthetic biology methods
  • experience in plant biology (desirable but not required)
  • experience in training and/or teaching
  • international experience (desirable but not required)

The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) is a world leader in plant and microbial science and is dedicated to making fundamental discoveries in the science of plant-microbe interactions. TSL has expanded its scientific mission not only to continue providing fundamental biological insights into plant-pathogen interactions, but also to deliver novel, genomics-based solutions that will significantly reduce losses from major crop diseases, especially in developing countries
